LRS project
Presentation
The Linbox Rescue Server is an asset management software including 5 modules :
- control panel (integrated into Webmin),
- system backup for emergency crash recovery, hard disk cloning or deployment. This module was fully developped by Linbox FAS.
- file backup, based on the famous BackupPC, to which we have added a configuration interface,
- inventory, based on ocs-inventory,
- remote control, based on TightVNC.
The integration of all these functions in a single web interface eases incredibly the management of network of PCs. The LRS is in use today in a number of enterprise, administration, schools, colleges, ... System administrators are delighted by the LRS as it releases them from idiot, inproductive tasks.
You may find screenshots of the different modules on http://www.linbox.com/ucome.rvt/any/en/Produits/LRS/screenshots .
The full LRS documentation is available here.
For who ?
You are a system administrator or information system director or COO, and you want a fast and efficient way to manage your PCs by hundreds or thousands. The LRS shines much when managing distant sites, as all functions are available through a web interface : you will be able to install or re-install a PC, configure it (or them), set up a software, switch it off, manage file backups, take control, from hundred or thousand kilometers away.
Why a free LRS ?
The Linbox Rescue Server (LRS) is the result of more than 6 man*years of research and development, fully financed by LinboxFAS. This software exists and is used in many companies and administrations (ministers also).
The operation started on tuesday the 5th of april. It relies on the capitalization of software license sales. The goal of LinboxFAS is to totally open the source code of the software, as soon as the investments made around the product will have been amortized thanks to the selling of licenses.
Each license feeds a counter, available here. This counter allows to visualise the sum that remains to be amortized. Each license sale leads to the corresponding diminution of the displayed amount. When the counter will reach 0, the software will be fully released under GPL.
To show the committment of LinboxFAS regarding free software, an intermediate threshold was previously defined and reached : the freeing of all software parts related to free OSes. For a comparison between the Libre/Free version of the LRS and the proprietary one please check the comparison page. To sum up, before completly freeing it, the LRS is free for free OSes and proprietary for proprietary OSes. For asking any questions on this operation, please write to libre at linbox . org.
The source code for GNU/Linux system backups as well as all files backup, inventory and remote control features are already published under the GPL. The sources are available in the SVN. And binaries, Webmin modules and a self-installing demo ISO image can be downloaded here.
