I got the same Problem

Description

Yesterday, I downloaded this: http://lrs.linbox.org/pub/lrs/demo/vmware/lrs_gpl_vmware_latest.zip

and loaded it in the latest vmware player on my Windows machine, it's running fine.

When I try to boot Local Disk from the linbox menu, I get this:

"Executing 'Local Hard Disk' root (hd0)

Filesystem type unknown, using whole disk

chainloader +1

Error 13: Invalide or unsupported executabel format

Press any key to continue..."

Then my system reboots. I cannot figure out why. My desktop is running FC6 with the default LVM configuration on a /dev/sda SATA2 disk. Grub is installed on my MBR, and it works fine when I disable Network boot (disable linbox) in my BIOS.

I cannot seem to find anyone else having this problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

I tried the MBR fix option, also, but it didn't work, I get the same "Filesystem type unknown, using whole disk" warning, followed by an orange screen and freeze. Nothing left to do but reboot. It didn't corrupt my MBR, I can still boot FC6 from local disk when no PXE boot is in the mix.

I'm happy to provide any more information you may need.

The problem I previously described was using my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop running Windows XP Pro with VMPlayer. Hoping I could resolve my issue, I converted this laptop into a Linbox rescue server by grabing the latest ISO and installing from CD. Installation finished, but now the Linbox rescue server cannot recognize my onboard NIC, which I believe to be a "Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller". This was a desperate attempt, I can go back to XP with VMware. Or, maybe I'll to go FC6 with VMWare Player? Or FC6 and attempt the installation of Linbox Rescue Server manually. The thing is, I have no high up of any of these options resolving the issue. It seems more like my FC6 desktop is not setup in a way that Linbox Rescue Server likes.

My desktop experiencing the problem of "filesystem unknown" when trying to Local Boot from the Linbox PXE boot options page is an AMD Athalon 64 x2 with FC6 x86_64, using a Maxtor Basics SATA II/300 Internal 200 GB 7200 RPM disk with 2 GB of DDR2 RAM. My fstab looks like this:

/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1 LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2 devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0 tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap swap defaults 0 0

and my /etc/grub.conf file looks like:

default=0 timeout=5 splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz hiddenmenu password --md5 [snip] title Fedora Core (2.6.18-1.2868.fc6)

root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2868.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.18-1.2868.fc6.img

title Fedora Core (2.6.18-1.2798.fc6)

and my partition scheme is: $ sudo /sbin/sfdisk -d /dev/sda Password: # partition table of /dev/sda unit: sectors

/dev/sda1 : start= 63, size= 208782, Id=83, bootable /dev/sda2 : start= 208845, size=390508020, Id=8e /dev/sda3 : start= 0, size= 0, Id= 0 /dev/sda4 : start= 0, size= 0, Id= 0

... is there any other information you need to diagnose this issue?

My paste from previous post screwed up the line breaks on my fstab, grub.conf and sfdisk dump, if you don't mind, reassemble the output with the line breaks in the right place.

Hi !

It seems that grub does not find the right boot signature in the boot sector... 0xAA55 should be found at the end of the 1st disk sector. Could you send me the 'bootsect' file after running 'dd if=/dev/sda of=bootsect count=1' ?

Cheers,

Ludovic.
